Getting Ahead in the Search Engines

SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation helps search engines identify the content on your website, which in turn helps them recommend your website for relevant searches.

When we build a site for you, we do all of the basics as part of the process. But, optimum performance of a website in search engines isn't a one off operation. It's an ongoing process that is finely tuned over time to improve your websites' ranking.

What do search engines look for in my website?

First and foremost 'content' before everthing. The amount, and quality of the text on your website is what matters most and an area that just cannot be neglected.

This is what people see and read, and what search engines are interested in to return the right results for a persons search.

Content should contain the phrases and terms that someone might type to find businesses in your sector. This doesn't mean write exclusivly for the search engines exactly, as the content must be understandable by someone reading your website, and obviously persuade them to buy or use your services. So, it can be a compromise.

Every Other Action Done is to Support Your Page Content

Additional work done 'behind the scenes' (in the code) is to explain to the search engines what a page is about.

For example, a page's title and description and each photo and image is described in the HTML.
Over-simplifying; search engines compare these elements to check relevance to the page's content and verify authenticity. Keywords & phrases detected by this relationship comparison then give emphasis to the important parts of your text. Your page is then indexed with this information and other factors which determine your contents authority and therefore ranking.

So it'll make very little difference if you have stuffed your 'description tags' with lots of key phrases, if your content is limited, incomprehensible, poorly written or non-existent!

Meta Data – Metadata is snippets of text that describe a page’s content. The Metadata is hidden within the code of a page, and doesn’t appear on the website to a user, but is detected by a search engine.

Page Title – This is the text you see at the top of your browser window or tab. Search engines use this text as the title of your page which is very important at giving the search engine, and the user, a quick bit of information on what your page is about.

Meta Description – A brief description of the page. This needs to contain key information about the content of the page including some of the text (words or phrases that you want to be found with.

Meta Keywords Attribute – A collection of keywords which is relevant to a page/website content.
